Baby update

Canella and resting baby

Canella and resting baby

Mama Canella and baby (we’re waiting on his real name, but in the meanwhile, he’s Twinkle Toes because of his one golden foot) are both well, happy, comfortable and content.  The mountain has been good to them today, blessing them with warm air, sunshine, fresh breeze, and the promise of rain to keep the pasture green and the water flowing.

Alan at the birth

Alan at the birth

This is a photo Bob took during the birth that I had sent to Karen and my folks last night, but thought I’d share with any other dog lovers (and Alan fans!) as a reminder of how much a part of the family our dogs can be, right there with us, helping us through the birthing!

Bob not only took birthing photos, but videos as well. I posted one of baby’s first step.  If you’d like, please see the link on YouTube. In the video, baby is only an hour old, mama still has her placenta.  Baby gets up, no matter how unruly those long legs are to manage, and begins looking to nurse right away.

  1. Thanks for sharing . . . this is so precious . . . I checked on my mare at 10:30p.m. and then my dad checked her at 11:15p.m. and there he was! She had the little fellow all clean and standing! I’m Amber’s Mom, she’s a friend of Forrest . . .

  2. Shari,
Thanks for writing – first, glad to “meet” Amber’s mom – that’s really great that she reached out to Forrest.
Second, about your mare and foal… isn’t it funny how sneaky they can be!?! And don’t you wish human labor/birth was as quick?
Pretty neat blog (and family) you have…
Thanks again for writing and introducing. Hope you’ll keep in touch.
    Gin

  3. Thank you Bob for filming the first steps! And thank you Gin for posting them! I feel so blessed to be able to share this with you even though I’m 800 miles away!

Gin, I love hearing the joy in your voice, too.

  4. Congratulations! Look at those fantastic feet!

I’m sure you all are both giddy and exhausted… sending you all our warmest thoughts and best wishes to keep you going over the next week or two. Special kudos to Alan for keeping watch over his “pack!” 🙂

  5. Congratulations…what a beauty. So lovely to see the foal getting some balance. Thank you for sharing.

  6. THank you for sharing this!!!

  7. Congratulations on Twinkle Toes! Such a gorgeous picture of momma and baby at the top. http://tinyurl.com/colg9v
